3 Steps to Getting Perfect Summer Skin

The sun is out and it's time to enjoy the outdoors, but that doesn't mean you should forget about your skin. Make sure to avoid overexposure to the sun, drink plenty of water, and don't skip out on skincare regimen. By following these simple steps, you'll have perfect summer skin in no time!

Overexposure to Sun Causes Premature Aging

One of the most important things you can do to protect your skin is to avoid overexposure to the sun. Sunburns not only damage your skin and is the biggest cause of premature fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, and sagging skin. Not to mention, it increases your risk for skin cancer. So, make sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even when it's cloudy. And, if you're going to be spending time outdoors, be sure to wear protective clothing, like a hat and sunglasses.

But, what about my base tan? According to the Mayo Clinic, "A base tan is no substitute for good sun protection. Plus, the risks of long-term tanning outweigh the unproven benefits of a base tan." Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a "safe" tan. A tan is your skin's way of protecting itself from further damage by producing more melanin. So, even if you're not burning, you're still causing damage to your skin. I highly recommend investing in self-tanning lotion or spray tan sessions to get that "just off the beach" look without damaging your skin.

Drink Plenty of Water to Keep Your Skin Healthy

Drinking plenty of water is essential for keeping your skin healthy and hydrated. When you're dehydrated, your skin will become dry and irritated. So, make sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, and more if you're active or live in a warm climate.

Drinking water can seem blah, but you can spice things up by adding your favorite fruits, herbs, or veggies to your water. I like to add a few slices of lemon, cucumber, and mint leaves to my water for a refreshing and hydrating treat.

Skipping Your Skin Care Routine Can Lead to Poor Skin

We tend to get busy during the warmer months, and our skincare routine is often the first thing to go. But, skipping out on your basic skincare routine can leave your skin looking and feeling dull, dry, and irritated and even increase the chances of acne breakouts. So, cleanse, tone, and moisturize your skin every day, and don't forget about exfoliating a few times a week to remove dead skin cells.

Warm weather means more time for fun in the sun, but it's important to remember to take care of your skin. Avoid overexposure to the sun, drink plenty of water, and don't skip out on your skincare regimen. By following these simple steps, you'll have perfect summer skin in no time!
